Overview

The certifications that pair best with a security clearance for high-paying government and defense IT jobs — and how to make your clearance work for you.

A security clearance is one of the most valuable assets in the IT job market — but a clearance paired with the right certifications is what unlocks the highest-paying, most secure roles in government and defense. Here are the certifications that best complement a clearance, and how to position yourself.

Why clearance + certification is a powerful combination

Cleared IT professionals are in persistent demand. The clearance process is expensive and slow, so employers prize candidates who already hold one — and they'll pay a premium. But a clearance proves you're trustworthy, not that you're technically qualified. Certifications provide that second half. Together, they make you exactly what defense contractors and government agencies are searching for: someone they can put to work immediately on sensitive systems.

The must-have baseline: CompTIA Security+

If you pursue only one certification for cleared IT work, make it CompTIA Security+. It's the baseline certification for a huge share of DoD roles under the 8140 framework, it's widely required or preferred in cleared job postings, and it's achievable relatively quickly. Security+ is the price of admission for most government cybersecurity and IT positions.

Foundational support: CompTIA A+ and Network+

For entry and mid-level cleared roles, A+ and Network+ establish the technical fundamentals many positions require (and they map to IAT Level I requirements). If you're earlier in your career, these build the base that Security+ sits on.

Advancing: CySA+, CASP+, and CISSP

To qualify for higher-level roles and command higher pay:

  • CompTIA CySA+ — for analyst and threat-detection roles; maps to intermediate DoD requirements.
  • CASP+ (SecurityX) — for senior technical roles and IAT Level III.
  • CISSP — a gold-standard senior security certification, frequently required for management and senior technical positions, and a major asset in cleared environments.

These advanced certifications, combined with a clearance and experience, position you for some of the best-compensated roles in the entire IT market.

Cloud certifications for modern defense IT

As government and defense modernize, cloud skills are increasingly valuable. AWS and Azure certifications (including their government/security-focused offerings) pair well with a clearance as agencies migrate workloads to cloud environments with strict security requirements. A cleared professional with cloud security skills is especially sought-after.

How to leverage your clearance

  • Highlight it clearly on your resume (level and status, per guidance).
  • Target cleared roles with defense contractors and agencies that specifically need cleared personnel.
  • Pair it with the right cert for the role — Security+ at minimum, advanced certs for senior positions.
  • Keep certifications current so you remain qualified under DoD requirements.

The bottom line

A clearance opens the door; certifications get you the job and the salary. Start with Security+ as the baseline, build foundational skills with A+ and Network+ if needed, and advance toward CySA+, CASP+, or CISSP for senior roles — adding cloud certifications as defense IT modernizes. The combination of a clearance and the right credentials is one of the strongest positions you can hold in IT.

Note: certification requirements for specific roles and contracts vary and change over time — confirm current requirements for the positions you target.
